Best Surf Spots in Finland and Baltic

Welcome to Baltic Surf! If you’re looking for uncrowded waves and a unique water experience, the Baltic Sea has you covered. This blog focuses mainly on wingfoiling and prone surfing, so you’ll find the best spots, tips, and conditions for these sports. Unlike busy surf destinations, the Baltic beaches often allow you to enjoy the waves all to yourself. With a good wetsuit, you can ride the waves all year round, from summer swells to chilly winter sessions. Below, we’ve mapped out the top surf and wingfoil spots across the Baltic Sea with short descriptions and key tips for each.

 

Finland

  • Hanko, Tulliniemi (location)
    • Sports: wingfoil, surfing
    • Wind directions: E, SE
    • Nice long beach but chop might be difficult for wingfoil beginners. Wave break is typically at the western end of the beach. Slight NE wind may work as well.
  • Hanko, Silversand (location)
    • Sports: wingfoil
    • Wind directions: W, NW
    • Great spot for beginners. Watch out for the underwater reef at the east end of the beach around front of the resort.
  • Helsinki, Lauttasaari (location)
    • Sports: wingfoil, surfing
    • Wind directions: S, SE
    • Intermediate spot but one of the best in Helsinki. Lots of underwater rocks so local knowledge is needed. Prone surfing has been spotted at the west side of Takaniemi.
  • Espoo, Mellsten (location)
    • Sports: wingfoil
    • Wind directions: SE, SW 
    • Best beginner spot near Helsinki for wingfoiling. Wind can be gusty if blowing over the islands.
  • Pori, Yyteri (location)
    • Sports: wingfoil, surfing
    • Wind directions: SW, W
    •  Best beginner prone surfing spot in Finland. Choose north or south side of the beach depending on conditions. Slightly NW wind may work as well. Some great waves have been reported closer to Herrainpäivät cape but watch out for underwater rocks.
  • Pori, Herrainpäivät/Karhuluto (location)
    • Sports: surfing
    • Wind directions: SW, W, NW 
    • Excellent wave spot.
  • Pori, Poliisinlahti (location
    • Sports: wingfoil, surfing
    • Wind: SW, W
    • Excellent wave spot with two starting location. One on the north side of the bay (Uparonkatu) which is popular for wingfoilers and intermediate surfers. The other start spot is at the beach (Koiraranta). Slight NW wind may work as well.

 

Estonia

  • Hiiumaa, Ristna (location)
    • Sports: wingfoiling, surfing
    • Wind directions: SW, W, NW
    • Excellent spot. Be cautious about safety.

Latvia

  • Lilaste/Saulkrasti (location)
    • Sports: surfing
    • Wind directions: SW, W, NW, N
    • Long beach break providing waves in variety of winds.
  • Liepaja (location)
    • Sports: surfing
    • Wind directions: N, NW, W, SW, S
    • Long beach break providing waves in variety of winds.
